St Andrews - Stravithie Castle - Scotland

What a wonderful day! We arrived in St Andrews late morning. The Dunhill European Classic was on so it was quite busy everywhere. Bright sunshine! The sandstone buildings are VERY old & EVERYWHERE!!!!! We walked the main streets - a young guy piping in the background. There were market stalls, wedding cars - it was all happening.
We had lunch at a cafe next to 'The Doll's House' where Kate Middleton was a waitress while studying here. Butter squash soup (like our pumpkin) in the biggest bowls I've seen plus door - step rounds of fresh bread! YUM!!! The lady we sat with told us about the coastal village of Crail.
The 12th century cathedral ruins are quite dramatic against the water & blue sky. University colleges & beautiful gardens surround it all.
We set off for Crail - very picturesque, known for it's pottery. We asked at a B&B about a accommodation - he laughed & said  we wouldn't get anything for miles - with the golf on & it being a long weekend for Glaswegians! But he said he might be able to help us - if we didn't mind travelling inland a bit (5 miles!). He rang his brother who had two rooms available. He directed us to his old family home Stravithie CASTLE!!!!!!
We could not believe it - kept looking at each other & just laughing! Big entrance gates, white Gatekeepers Lodge; ENORMOUS castle - surrounded by 30 acres of woodlands, & (now let - go golf course) his mother had put in when she was bored one year! He & his wife & 3 children live on main level (crossed swords, deer antlers on walls, BIG paintings, ENORMOUS polished table & chairs in dining room & & & ................................. just incredible!
He (David Chalmer) has 9 rooms/apartments as B&B plus 6 little HOUSES 'out the back' which he lets out. Sadly we could only stay one night! We had bedroom plus bathroom but kitchen!
